Shelter Island strictly prohibits all rentals for terms of less than 14 nights. For rentals of 14 nights or longer in non-owner-occupied properties, a biennial Rental Permit from the Town Building Department is required. All rentals are subject to a 5.5% Suffolk County Occupancy Tax and an 8.625% NY State/local sales tax, the latter of which must be remitted by the host.
To host an Airbnb in Shelter Island, you must understand that all rentals must be for a minimum of 14 nights; shorter stays are not allowed. If you are not living in the house during the rental period, you must obtain a two-year, $200 Rental Permit from the Town Building Department, which may require an inspection. You must also include your permit number in your online listing. Be aware that you are personally responsible for collecting and remitting an 8.625% state/local sales tax, in addition to the 5.5% county occupancy tax that Airbnb may remit for you.
